I have the crappiest coolest life ever...
I delivered next weekends episode to the station a couple hours ago and the girl at the security desk who seemed to know who I was asked me why I was delivering the show. I guess people who have there own Tv shows aren't usually the ones who also deliver the tape to the station. I just laughed and said something about living the glamarous life of a two bit Canadian Television host.
Who knows though, maybe I am the only dude who has his own show but still has to be the one who makes sure the show gets delivered to the station each week. Not that what I have been passing off as "my show" each week for the last six years is anything at all like an actual Network television show. Trust me, after working on "Be Real with JR DIGS" and seeing first hand what it was like to have a budget and to work with a real producer and director, I can assure you there is a difference. I never once had to deliver an episode of "Be Real" to the station or do really anything other than show up on time, strut my stuff and host the show which is what I was hired to do.
That being said, what if it's another five years before I am given another shot by the network to work on another Network produced series. I'll be honest, I don't think that the work I did on "BE Real" or getting nominated for a Gemini for "Best Host" on my first Network produced series has changed things at all for me. In the USA being one of only five people to be nominated for "Best host in a lifestyle series" would without a doubt, end up landing a nobody like me a bunch of new gig's in Tv or at the very least, find that Network exec's are suddenly interested in you like they never were before. This is Canada though! Enough said!
So I have been kinda waiting for the last few months to see how things would shake down for me and what I have come to realize is that I guess I'll probably always be the guy who needs to make sure the episode gets delivered to the station on time if I want to keep making what some people think is an actual Tv show, my Tv show!
If it takes another five years of toiling away before I get another series, it can't be like the last five years cause well, it just can't. That's why driving around in this cool van I bought, meeting people, shooting footage and then cutting it together all on the fly seems like a great idea these days. It's easy to do, I don't really need much of a budget and it's a blast. It's something I could maybe do for years without kicking the shit out of myself all over again.
In January I'll start airing the shows I have been shooting from my Van, plus I am going to be hosting a game show as well in the new year! Why the hell not! I've always had to be a take what you can get kinda guy so why should that change now. As a matter of fact, I have been asked by the producers if I would consider doing a bit of game show type hosting sometime before the new year in the effort to gain a bit of experience and work the bugs out a little. Not to mention make a bit of scratch before Xmas which ain't such a bad idea.
So that might be happening sooner than later, stay tuned and I'll keep you guys posted about that for sure. Until then, keep spreading the word about your ol pal Digs, cause it looks like I'm gearing up for another half decade of low budget television which will almost certainly go unnoticed by everyone other than you guys!
This has been way too long of a blog, I'm going to stop now.
